The red, white, and blue colors were chosen to match the colors of the Great Seal of the United States.
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress of the newly formed United States of America passed a resolution authorizing the Great Seal that would be used for official government business and still is used to this day. The American flag, also known as The Stars and Stripes became the official flag in 1777 and used the colors red, white, and blue from the Great Seal.
Red stands for hardiness and valor (courage). White is for innocence and purity. Blue is for vigilance, justice, and perseverance. The stars on the flag are symbols of the heavens and the divine goal that mankind has always aspired to reach. The stripes are like the rays of light coming from the sun.
The eagle became the symbol of American national pride in spite of the myth that Benjamin Franklin’s suggested using a wild turkey for the national bird. The eagle was chosen in 1782 because of its great strength, long life, and its majestic appearance. Moreover, at that time, the eagle was thought to only exist on the American continent.
In more contemporary times, the red color has been noted to be symbolic for all the blood spilled in defense of American freedom by our nation’s military forces and therefore to honor the veterans who served their country and those who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for their country.
